Seven members of the 37th Texas Cavalry were present June 20 & 21 at Carter's Grove, Colonial Williamsburg, Virginia, as invited guests to participate in their 2nd Annual Symposium, "Brothers In Arms: The African American Military Experience. Members of the regiment encamped with the 54th Massachusetts and the 102nd USCT to represent the participation of Black Southerners with the Confederate military. Colonial Williamsburg organizers reported that guests were asking for the 37th Texas as they came through the gates, and SGT Searles, 1st SGT Tate, and others reported a universally warm and receptive audience. At times, they were addressing up to 40 guests on matters of the War. During the two days, several elderly Black residents of Williamsburg shared their family histories with members of the 37th. They recounted how, as children, their elders told them of being Black Confederate soldiers and of a battle at Williamsburg fought almost totally by Black Confederate soldiers. The 37th has been invited to return to the 3rd Annual Brothers In Arms June 19 & 20, 1999, and we will do such in much greater force. Members of the 37th who attended were Regimental Nurse Antoinette Brown, 1st LT Paulovitch, 1st SGT Tate, SGT Searles, Trooper Harrison, Trooper Luton, and Trooper Davis. |
