Slaves and former slaves often accompanied White soldiers into the Confederate Army and sometimes they fought shoulder-to-shoulder.

Silas Chandler, a former slave from Palo Alto, Mississippi, endured the dangers of camp and battlefield along with his friend and childhood playmate, Andrew Martin Chandler.
