History Mangled Once Again |
The 37th was asked by Desert Rose Productions to review a video for PBS titled "The Forgotten Battle of Ft. Pillow and the Birth of the KKK" the first of what is intended to be a trilogy of "fact-based" documentaries including "Black Rebels" and "Stand Watie and the Native American Confederates." The production launches itself on a series of major historical lies and slides downhill from there. We are treated to "sound bite history" such as the firing on Ft. Sumter taking place "in a rage," and that Lincoln's calling up of 75,000 troops "...was to allow the freedom of their [Black] people." The cast includes: a whimpering white apologist; a Black Congressman who is included in an attempt at credibility; and an uncredentialed Black "historian" whose opinion includes the profound misstatement that "The Civil War was about racism..." On the plus side are Lonnie E. Maness, Ph.D., author of "An Untutored Genius" and the only genuine historian given much opportunity to speak; Michael R. Bradley, Ph.D., Professor of Social Studies; Edward Williams, III, Shelby County, Tennessee, historian; and Jerry Lee White, a Civil War reenactor and descendant of one of Forrest's men who was at Ft. Pillow. The "Ft. Pillow" segment of this production is fantasy history evidently served up to obtain funding from the Nevada Gaming Commission for Educational Excellence. Conversely, the portion of the tape on the birth of the KKK was well-researched and well-produced and the contrast makes clear the outright negative bias of the Ft. Pillow segment. Desert Rose Productions admitted to numerous historical flaws but "...remains pleased with the overall content." Their past offer to let the 37th review scripts for upcoming segments was withdrawn. We cannot recommend "The Forgotten Battle of Ft. Pillow and the Birth of the KKK" and we would not recommend any other Civil War productions by Desert Rose. |

Video Cover Art Politically Corrected |
The first movie to offer a fact-based portrayal of the War for Southern Independence and include a forthright portrayal of a Black Confederate soldier was "politically corrected" for your convenience. The 37th documented the USA Film distributor's efforts to bury a critically-acclaimed film by delaying release for almost a month past the critical Christmas season, limiting nationwide distribution to only about 200 theaters, and delaying the scheduled May 2000 video release date. Now we see the reason for the video release delay until July 18, 2000 - a change in graphic design of the DVD cover has removed the "inconvenient" image of Jeffrey Wright as a Black Confederate soldier. When contacted for comment writer/producer James Schamus responded: "We asked them to change the cover back but they didn't -- js" NOTE: You can find an excellent review written by "Gettysburg"producer/director Ron Maxwell on his site here: http://www.ronmaxwell.com/reviews.html |

EBONY Magazine Executive Editor Lerone Bennett, Jr., has undertaken to truthfully document the racial attitudes and intentions of the man behind the myth of Lincoln as "The Great Emancipator" and is paying the price by having his work ignored by literary reviewers. Seems some folks do not want to know that Lincoln used the "N word," supported "Black Laws", and carefully orchestrated the "Emancipation Proclamation" to support his proposal to export ALL African Americans and create a "lily-white America without Native Americans, African Americans and Martin Luther Kings." Since you are not likely to find this in your bookstore or local library, you can order direct from EBONY. |

Dateline March 10, 2000 - Summerville, SC The 37th's 3rd SGT Harrison was an invited speaker to the Gainesville, GA, 27th GA Reg. Camp #1404 of the SCV where he discussed Black Confederates, our BGen. Terrell, the 37th's regimental history, who he is, and why he chooses to reenact as a Confederate and support the expression of Southern and Confederate heritage. SGT Harrison reported that he was greeted with intense enthusiasm, and one individual asked how much 37th dues are. Everyone got a good healthy dose of the 37th web site which should result in an influx of visitors to our web site and possibly some new recruitment as well. SGT Harrison was given a certificate of appreciation, and the Camp members agreed to plan on being more active on going to Klan rallies to protest Hate group misuse of OUR flags and symbols. The 37th Texas encourages those who wish to genuinely defend Southern and Confederate heritage and our right to observe our heritage to attend white supremacist, Nazi, or Klan rallies to stand with protestors in full Confederate uniform with a sign stating opposition to misuse of Confederate symbols. |
"Ride with the Devil" |
Dateline Jan. 29, 2000- Charleston, SC The special showing of "Ride with the Devil" hosted by 3rd Sergeant Harrison of the 37th Texas and by arrangement with writer/producer James Schamus and the folks at USA Films in Los Angeles and Atlanta took place at seven in the evening on Saturday, January 29th. Despite bad weather, a news crew from Channel 2 WCBD Television was present, Jonathan Tilove and a photographer from Newhouse News were there, and also Chris Sullivan and his photographer from "Southern Partisan" magazine. While "Ride with the Devil" did not show much of a Black Confederate (Jeffrey Wright) acting as a scout for Quantrill, it did show him fighting willingly alongside his fellow white Southern compatriots, which is still very different and good for the cause of historical truth. |

USA Movies - Ride With The Devil - This is a critically-acclaimed chronicle of the Kansas-Missouri border clashes that saw the Yankee Redlegs, Captain Quantrill, and Bloody Bill Anderson riding in ambush and mayhem. Following the experiences of Tobey Maguire, Skeet Ulrich, Jewel, and Jeffrey Wright, director Ang Lee ("The Ice Storm") and writer producer James Schamus have taken a bold move to cast Jeffrey Wright as a Black Confederate scout and spy modeled after Quantrill's loyal Black scout and spy, John Noland. James Schamus offered the 37th a special showing (see above). Despite very good reviews (Review). "Ride" was never released to more than a handful of theaters and release on home video has been delayed without explanation from May, 2000, to September, 2000. It seems that "Ride" is paying the price for being historically truthful as opposed to "politically correct." |
Co. C Educators Trooper Stubbe, Trooper Aguilar, Captain Topete and Diego Niño | ||
| The 37th Texas Co. C visited South Gate Middle School in Los Angeles, where Trooper Ed Aguliar, Captain Omar Topete, Trooper Diego Niño, and Trooper Tim Stubbe participated in Civil War Days, conducting a living history demonstration with four members of the California 100 (Yankees). This History lesson at a predominantly Hispanic junior high school was a great reward for both the students and reenactors alike. Emphasis was on the Hispanic role that was played in the Civil War. Ed Aguilar conducted lessons in both English and Spanish. The students marveled at the uniforms and guns and the role of Hispanics in the war. |

| From left, Civil War reenactors, C.E. (Sonny) Scroggins, Topeka, KS., of the 37th Texas cavalry plays the role of Confederate William Quantrill's black scout, John Noland. Eunice H. Ebert-Stallworth, Lawrence, KS., as a slave; and Logan Scroggins, Topeka, KS., as a federal soldier of the 1st Kansas Colored Volunteer Infantry known as Lane's Brigade or Lane's Black Diamonds, gather in front of the Eldridge Hotel in downtown Lawrence, KS on Saturday, August 21, 1999, to commemorate the anniversary of Quantirll's Raid on Lawrence. The commemoration was this century's first and last Confederate appearance in front of the Eldridge Hotel, which was burned to the ground by Quantrill in 1863 during his quest to destroy James Lane of Lawrence, a proponent of black emancipation referred to as the great Jayhawker. |
