Black Confederate Drummer |
On November 2, 2001, proper military honors were paid to Henry "Dad" Brown a Black veteran of the Mexican War, the War for Southern Independence (as a Confederate drummer), and the Spanish-American War. The ceremony also encompassed the dedication of a South Carolina state Roadside Historical Marker to further recognize and honor Brown. The ceremony was an officially sponsored event of Darlington city and county governments. Ms. Wilhelmina Johnson, a Black Darlington County Councilwoman, was extremely supportive and said, " We wish to thank the 37th Texas Cavalry without whom this day would not have been possible." South Carolina State Senators McConnell and Patterson were also extremely supportive. The Pee Dee Camp of the SCV, the 27th SC, the 26th SC, and of course the 37th Texas put their hearts into making Brown's Day truly special, drawing tears from the very racially mixed crowd of about 200. McConnell made some deeply heart wrenching statements about the importance of Brown's Life and how he left us all great lessons to be learned. However it was Patterson who said, "Henry 'Dad' Brown and I marched to different drummers, BUT we marched together.". Marvin Thompson, a Black reenactor with the 54th Massachusetts USCT, galvanized as NC Artillery and stood in the ranks to fire the 21-gun salute to honor Brown. Thompson also made a stirring address in which he urged the attendees to learn better the truths of history. The United State flag, the South Carolina state flag, and the battle flag of the Army of Northern Virginia as flown by the 8th SC Volunteer Infantry, waved in the breeze both at the grave site and at the dedication of the Roadside Marker. All of the major TV networks were represented as well as the local Darlington News (read the newspaper story HERE). Further links will be provided as made available to the 37th. This is just the first of many such events planned by the 37th. |
