There are 26 "Negro," four Hispanic, and one Cherokee Confederates at eternal rest with their comrades. We cannot answer, but only question why Black Southerners chose to ignore promises of freedom from all captivity and bondage in return for a few words and a signature - but instead remained loyal unto death. We cannot answer, but we can choose to honor their bravery and loyalty.

Camp Morton had the lowest death rate of any prisoner of war camp, approximately ten percent. Using that figure we can estimate that between 250 and 300 Black Confederates passed through Camp Morton during the War.

Major Kelley's Great-great Granduncle, Lorenzo Dow Kelley, then attached to the 23rd Mississippi Infantry, has lain in this mass grave with his comrades since May 30, 1862.
