The monument is proposed to be constructed of five colors of marble, depicting the five major racial groups who joined together to fight as comrades-in-arms for their Confederacy - right to left - African American (black), Hispanic (brown), Native American (red), Chinese American (yellow), and Caucasian (white). Foreign-born Confederates will be portrayed by their countries of origin. Dimensions are proposed at three and a half feet high, three feet deep, and five feet wide. The design is meant to symbolize the rejoining of the Confederates of Color, side-by-side, once again, for all to see and for all eternity. It is vitally important that they should be honored collectively as they once stood on the Field of Honor and never falsely separated again. The bronze plaque on top will have a head-and-shoulders bas-relief depiction of the five races in uniform standing side-by-side, and shoulder to shoulder based on sketches done by Mike Vilardi, artist of "The Chandler Boys" using Confederates on the 37th's web site as models. The Christian cross and the Jewish Star of David will be portrayed at each side of the men. Vertically, along the left and right edges of the plaque, will be the flags honoring the Confederates of foreign birth. The lower portion will have an appropriate inscription recognizing and honoring the sacrifice and contribution of ALL Southerners of all races and faiths who served loyally and sacrificed. |
