The History of Confederates of Color

37th Texas Cavalry (Terrell's)

Many of us have ancestors who fought in the Civil War (or the War Between the States, depending on which side of the Mason-Dixon line you're from). For those with non-white ancestors-African American, Hispanic, Native American and Jewish-it may be a surprise to learn that those ancestors fought for the Confederate Army. One Texas Civil War reenactment group has dedicated a deep, informative and controversial Web site to teach visitors more about these "forgotten Confederates." Its historical references, including quotes from Abraham Lincoln revealing his position that whites were superior and from soldiers of color who fought as Rebels, shed new light on the participation of Americans of color in the war.
